Yangjimal Children's Park in Suwon received the highest grade of BF certification and a special award for universal design from GOOD DESIGN.
Yangjimal Children's Park is a barrier-free integrated playground that can be used by children with disabilities and children without disabilities. The combination playground is equipped with ramps that eliminate ledges and steps and are wheelchair accessible, a seesaw that can be ridden lying down, and a rotating stage connected to a flat area. The park is also equipped with voice prompts, Braille signs, and Braille blocks for the visually impaired.
Barrier-Free (BF) certification is a system conducted by the Korea Disability Development Institute, a designated certification agency of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. It evaluates whether facilities are planned and installed so that all users, including children, the elderly, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and people with temporary disabilities, can access and use them without inconvenience, using 44 items in five categories. It is categorized into general grade of 70 points or more, excellent grade of 80 points or more, and best grade of 90 points or more, and is divided into preliminary certification before completion and full certification after completion.
Yangjimal Children's Park was the first park in the country to receive a 94-point excellent rating in the preliminary certification, and reconfirmed its excellent rating with a 97-point rating in the post-completion certification. It is also the first in the country to receive an excellent rating in the children's park category.
GOOD DESIGN is a system that grants marks to excellent designs based on the Industrial Design Promotion Act by comprehensively examining the appearance, function, materials, and economy of products, and has been implemented every year since 1985. This year, 875 entries were submitted and 339 were selected, and about 70 products were awarded the Presidential Award, Prime Ministerial Award, and Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award.
Cheongwoo Fun Station won the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award (Special Award for Universal Design) for 'Hills Ocean' installed at Hillstate in Paju Unjeong.
Hills Ocean embodies the concept of the ocean with the curve of the waves as the motif, the gradual height of the steel structure, and the blue color scheme. The various height configurations, centered around net play, are designed to allow children to choose appropriate play activities based on their age and developmental level. The site has universal design elements with ramps and height-adjustable structures to make it accessible to both children and adults.
Both achievements are the result of designing spaces and products with all users in mind, not just one particular user. Cheongwoo Fun Station will continue to use creating inclusive play environments as a starting point for our design criteria.
